Muscles of the back. Intertransversarii is illustrated in the zoomed in picture[2]

Name

  • Intertransversarii
  • Intertransverse Muscles
  • Mm. Intertransversarii
  • Musculi Intertransversarii

General

  • Small deep muscles located between transverse processes of adjacent vertebrae
  • They help stabilize the spine and contribute to side bending unilaterally

Structure

  • Present throughout the entire vertebral column
  • Subsegments
    • Cervical
      • Anterior Intertransversarii
      • Posterior Intertransversarii
    • Thoracic
      • Thoracic Intertransversarii
    • Lumbar
      • Lateral Lumbar Intertransversarii
      • Medial Lumbar Intertransversarii

Origin

  • Anterior/Posterior Intertransversarii
    • Anterior & posterior tubercle, respectively, of transverse process of vertebrae C2-T1
  • Thoracic Intertransversarii
    • Transverse process of vertebrae T11-L1
  • Lateral Lumbar Intertransversarii
    • Transverse process of vertebrae L2-L5
  • Medial Lumbar Intertransversarii
    • Accessory process of vertebrae L2-L5

Insertion

  • Anterior/Posterior Intertransversarii
    • Anterior & posterior tubercle, respectively, of transverse process of vertebrae C1-C7
  • Thoracic Intertransversarii
    • Transverse process of vertebrae T10-T12
  • Lateral Lumbar Intertransversarii
    • Transverse process of vertebrae L1-L4
  • Medial Lumbar Intertransversarii
    • Mammillary process of vertebrae L1-L4

Actions

  • Bilateral: Stabilization of spine
  • Unilateral: Sidebending of spine to same side

Vascular Supply

  • Occipital Artery
  • Deep Cervical Artery
  • Ascending Cervical Artery
  • Vertebral Arteries
  • Lumbar Arteries

Innervation

  • Cervical
    • Spinal Nerves (Ventral Rami)
  • Thoracic
    • Spinal Nerves (Dorsal Rami)
  • Lumbar
    • Spinal Nerves (Ventral Rami - Lateral, Dorsal Rami - Medial)

Clinical Significance

  • Needs to be updated
