A) Dissection with foot inverted by underlying wedge. B. Lateral radiograph. C) Dissection.[1]

Nomenclature

  • Lateral Collateral Ligament of the Ankle
  • Lateral Ankle Ligament Complex
  • Ankle Lateral Ligament
  • Fibular Collateral Ligament Complex
  • Lateral Ligament Complex of the Ankle
  • Lateral Collateral Ligament Complex of the Ankle
  • Lateral Ankle Ligaments

Description

  • Set of 3 ligaments that resist inversion of the ankle joint
  • They run from the lateral Malleolus of the fibula to the talus, calcaneus

Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL)

  • Anterior component
  • Origin: anteromedially from the anterior margin of the fibular malleolus to the talus
  • Insert: inferior of its lateral articular facet and to the lateral aspect of its neck

Calcaneofibular Ligament

  • Middle component
  • Origin: depression anterior to the apex of the fibular malleolus
  • Insert: tubercle on the lateral calcaneal surface
  • crossed by fibularis longus and brevis

Posterior Talofibular Ligament (PTFL)

  • Posterior component
  • Origin: horizontally from the distal part of the lateral malleolar fossa
  • Insert: lateral tubercle of the posterior talar process
  • Tibial slip of fibers connects it to the medial malleolus
The lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle joint. The tibiofibular ligament is also shown[2]

Tibiofibular Syndesmosis

  • The syndesmosis can be considered as part of the lateral complex
  • Anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL)
  • Posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (PITFL)
  • Transverse tibiofibular ligament (TTFL)
  • Interosseous ligament
