  • Lateral Patellar Retinaculum

  • Retinaculum laterale patellae

General

  • Fibrous expansion comprised of superficial and deep layers
  • Deep/superficial fibers insert on the lateral border of the patella, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon
  • They also extend posteriorly to blend with the lateral margin of the knee joint capsule, inferior surface of lateral tibial condyle

Superficial Fibers

Deep Fibers

Function

  • Stabilize of the patella[2]
  • Resists medial patellar displacement

Clinical Significance

Surgical

  • Lateral release can be performed for patients with abnormal patellar tracking or recurrent dislocation
