General
- Fibrous expansion comprised of superficial and deep layers
- Deep/superficial fibers insert on the lateral border of the patella, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon
- They also extend posteriorly to blend with the lateral margin of the knee joint capsule, inferior surface of lateral tibial condyle
Superficial Fibers
- Originate from the illiotibial band, vastus lateralis fascia
- Pass anteriorly to insert onto the patella, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon
Deep Fibers
- Lateral Patellofemoral Ligament
- Transverse Ligament of the Knee
- Patellotibial Bands
- Epicondylopatellar Bands
Function
Clinical Significance
Surgical
- Lateral release can be performed for patients with abnormal patellar tracking or recurrent dislocation
