• Lateral Patellar Retinaculum
• Lateral Retinaculum
• Retinaculum laterale patellae

General

• Fibrous expansion comprised of superficial and deep layers
• Deep/superficial fibers insert on the lateral border of the patella, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon
• They also extend posteriorly to blend with the lateral margin of the knee joint capsule, inferior surface of lateral tibial condyle

Superficial Fibers

• Originate from the illiotibial band, vastus lateralis fascia
• Pass anteriorly to insert onto the patella, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon

Deep Fibers

• Lateral Patellofemoral Ligament
• Transverse Ligament of the Knee
• Patellotibial Bands
• Epicondylopatellar Bands

Function

• Stabilize of the patella
• Resists medial patellar displacement

Clinical Significance

• Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
• Patellar Dislocation
• Patellar Instability

Surgical

• Lateral release can be performed for patients with abnormal patellar tracking or recurrent dislocation
