- The middle scalene is one of the Scalene Muscles of the Neck
Origin
- Posterior tubercle of transverse process of vertebrae C3-C7
Insertion
- Superior surface of 1st rib
Actions
- Elevation of 1st rib (Accessory muscle of inspiration)
- Bilateral: Flexion of cervical spine
- Unilateral: Side bending and rotation of cervical spine to same side
Vascular Supply
- Ascending Cervical Artery (Muscular branches)
Nerve
- Cervical spinal nerves C3-C7
- Cervical Plexus
