Introduction

• The middle scalene is one of the Scalene Muscles of the Neck

Origin

• Posterior tubercle of transverse process of vertebrae C3-C7

Insertion

• Superior surface of 1st rib

Actions

• Elevation of 1st rib (Accessory muscle of inspiration)
• Bilateral: Flexion of cervical spine
• Unilateral: Side bending and rotation of cervical spine to same side

Vascular Supply

• Ascending Cervical Artery (Muscular branches)

Nerve

• Cervical spinal nerves C3-C7
• Cervical Plexus
