Origin
- Transverse process of vertebra C1
Insertion
- Occipital bone
- Inferior nuchal line, middle 1/3
- Superior to Rectus Capitis Posterior Major
Actions
- Bilateral: Extension of head
- Unilateral: Lateral flexion/sidebending of head to same side, Rotation of head to opposite side
Innervation
- Suboccipital Nerve (Posterior ramus of cervical spinal nerve C1)
Vascular Supply
- Vertebral Artery
- Occipital Artery (Deep Descending Branch)
