Name

  • Posterior Scalene
  • Scalenus Posterior Muscle

General

  • The posterior scalene is one of the Scalene Muscles of the Neck
  • It contributes to movement of the neck and acts as an accessory muscle of respiration

Origin

  • Posterior tubercle of transverse process of vertebrae C4-C7

Insertion

  • Anterolateral surface of 2nd rib

Actions

  • Elevation of 2nd rib (Accessory muscle of inspiration)
  • Bilateral: Flexion of cervical spine
  • Unilateral: Sidebending and rotation of cervical spine to same side

Vascular Supply

  • Ascending Cervical Artery (Muscular branches)
  • Superficial Cervical Artery

Innervation

  • Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves C6-C8
