  • Present throughout the entire vertebral column
  • Deep to multifidus
  • Subsegments
    • Rotatores Colli/Cervicis
    • Rotatores Thoracis (most well-developed of the subsegments)
      • Rotatores Longi (Long Rotatores)
      • Rotatores Brevis (Short Rotatores)
    • Rotatores Lumborum

Origin

  • Rotatores Longi
    • Superior/Posterior aspect of transverse process of vertebrae T1-T12
  • Rotatores Brevis
    • Transverse process of vertebrae T2-T12

Insertion

  • Rotatores Longi
    • Spinous process of vertebrae 2 levels above origin
  • Rotatores Brevis
    • Spinous process of vertebrae 1 level above origin

Actions

  • Bilateral: Extension of spine
  • Unilateral: Rotation of spine to opposite side
  • Maintain posture

Vascular Supply

  • Posterior Intercostal Arteries
  • Lumbar Arteries

Innervation

  • Spinal nerves (Dorsal Rami)
