Semimembranosus Gastrocnemius Bursa
Description

Name
- Semimembranosus Gastrocnemius Bursa (Sm-Gb)
- Semimembranosus-gastrocnemius Recess
Anatomy
- One of the many bursae of the knee
- Found in the posteromedial popliteal fossa[3]
- Located between the semimembranosus tendon, medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle
- Cranial to the joint line at the level of the upper medial femoral condyle
1 way valve[4]
- Allows synovial fluid to pass into bursa where it is sequestered
- In flexion, valve is open allowing flow
- In extension, valve is closed due to muscle tension of SemiM and Gastroc
Function
- May provide protective effect against hydraulic pressure from knee effusions[5]
- Size of BC roughly correlates with size of knee effusion[6]
