Anatomy

  • One of the many bursae of the knee
  • Located proximal to the knee joint
  • Between the prefemoral and suprapatellar fat pads, inferior to quad tendon

Actions

  • Reduces friction between the two fat pads
  • Reservoir for an effused knee

Variant Anatomy

  • Communicates directly with knee joint in 85% of people
  • In 15% of patients, there is an embryonic septum which separates it from the knee joint[4]
