Subscapular Nerves

Description

This subscapularis muscle drawing shows the upper and lower subscapular nerves originating from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus[1]

Name

  • Upper Subscapular Nerve
  • Lower Subscapular Nerve
  • Short Subscapular Nerve

General

  • Two branches from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus from C5 and C6 nerve roots
  • Innervates muscles of the scapula

Upper Subscapular Nerve

  • Enters the upper part of the subscapularis
  • Frequently represented by two branches

Lower Subscapular Nerve

  • Superior division supplies the lower part of subscapularis
  • Inferior division innervates teres minor

Thoracodorsal Nerve

  • Sometimes considered one of the subscapular nerves
  • Responsible for innervating Latissimus Dorsi
