Valsalva Maneuver

Purpose

  • A forced exhalation event designed to increase intrathoracic pressure

Description

  • Patient is asked to take a deep inhalation
  • They can then close their breath and perform a forced exhalation to exhaustion
  • Positive test
    • Resolution/ improvement in radicular symptoms

Cervical Radiculopathy

  • Rubinstein et al[1]
    • Sensitivity: 22%
    • Specificity: 94%
