Articularis Genus

Introduction

General

  • Also called the subcrureus muscle
  • Small skeletal muscle in the thigh, just above the knee
  • Pulls the suprapatellar bursa during extension of the knee, preventing impingement
  • Can be attached to the medial patellar plica

  • Pulls suprapatellar bursa superiorly during knee extension (prevents impingement of synovial membrane between patella and femur)

Anatomic Variants

  • Sometimes consists of several separate muscle bundles
  • The muscle is without a distinct fascia
