Common Fibular Nerve
(Redirected from Common peroneal nerve)
Description
-
Common site of common peroneal nerve compression during positional injury[1]
-
Common peroneal nerve entrapment. Left -entrapment of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) at the peroneus longus (PL) peroneal tunnel (circle) near the fibular neck (circle). Right -sensory distribution of common peroneal nerve entrapment[2]

Nomenclature
- Common Peroneal Nerve
- Common Fibular Nerve
- External Popliteal Nerve
- Lateral Popliteal Nerve
- Peroneal Nerve
- Fibular Nerve (Common Trunk)
Overview
- Nerve Roots: L4, L5, S1, S2
- Motor
- Sensory
- Lateral leg, dorsal foot
Anatomic Course
- Originates in the popliteal fossa, branching off the sciatic nerve
- Follows the medial border of biceps femoris
- Runs over the lateral head of gastrocnemius
- Here the two cutaneous branches come off
- The nerve then wraps around the neck of the fibula
- It passes between the attachments of fibularis longus
- Here the nerve terminates then divides into
Motor Function
Sensory Function
- Sural Communicating Nerve
- Combines with a branch of the tibial nerve to form the sural nerve
- Innervates the skin over the lower posterolateral leg
- Lateral Sural Cutaneous Nerve
- Innervates the skin over the upper lateral leg
- Superficial Fibular Nerve
- Innervates the skin of the anterolateral leg
- Dorsum of the foot, except the first web space
- Deep Fibular Nerve
- Innervates the skin of the first web space
Clinical Significance
Pathology
- Peroneal Neuropathy
- Proximal Fibular Fracture
- Acute Compartment Syndrome
- Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome
- Common Fibular Nerve Injury
- Drop Foot
Surgical Considerations
- At risk during knee arthroscopy, total knee arthroplasty, proximal tibial osteotomy, and fibular head procedures.
