  • Capsule of the Hip Joint

Anatomic Description

  • Enclosed by a strong fibrous capsule, lined internally by synovial membrane
  • Proximal: Attached to the acetabulum, transverse acetabular ligament
  • Distal: proximal femur, intertrochanteric line
  • Approx 1 cm superomedial to interotrochanteric crest
  • Thick anterosuperior, particularly in the upright position when the hip is extended
  • Posteroinferiorly, relatively thin and loosely attached
  • Zona orbicularis: deep circular fibers from the collar around the femoral neck
