Attachments
- Proximal
- Iliac Crest
- Formed by the Tensor Fascia Lata, Gluteus Maximus[3]
- Distal
- Passes over the lateral femoral condyle
- Inserts at Gerdy's tubercle, 2 cm inferior to the lateral joint line
- Fibrous attachments from IT band to femur
- Connected to the linea aspera by an intermuscular septum
- Connected to supracondylar region of the femur by course fibrous bands
Actions
- Proximal
- Contributes to extension, abduction and external rotation of the hip
- Used during walking, running, cycling, etc
- Distal
- Provides stability to the knee
- Assists with knee extension, flexion
- Lateral knee stability
Vascular Supply
- Superior gluteal artery (SGA)
- Ascending branch of lateral circumflex femoral artery (LFCA)
