- Frondiform ligament (inferior)
General
- Broad ligamentous sheet located on the dorsal aspect of foot[2]
- Consists of superior and inferior extensor retinacula
Superior Extensor Retinaculum
- Located proximally to the dorsal aspect of the ankle joint
- Houses tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, fibularis tertius tendons
- Neurovascular: anterior tibial vessels, deep fibular nerve
- Note: the superficial fibular nerve passes superficially to it
- Origin: anterior aspect of the distal fibula
- Insert: medially to the anterior aspect of the distal tibia
Inferior Extensor Retinaculum
- Y shaped and is located distal to the superior extensor retinaculum dorsally
- Stem of the retinaculum is attached to the lateral aspect of the upper surface of the calcaneus
- It then divides into two bands
- Proximal limb, attached medially to the medial malleolus
- Distal limb, attached to the plantar aponeurosis
- The proximal limb contains a deep and superficial band
- Forms the roof of the anterior tarsal tunnel
- contains the tendons of extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, tibialis anterior, fibularis tertius
