Medial Patellar Retinaculum

From WikiSM

Description

Medial patellar retinaculum[1]
Major supporting ligaments of the medial knee[2]
Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL), Medial patellomenisceal ligament (MPML), Medial patellotibial ligamente (MPTL), Medial retinaculum (MR), Vastus medialis obliquus (VMO), Rectus femoris (RF), Medial collateral ligament (MCL).[3]

Name

  • Medial Patellar Retinaculum
  • Retinaculum Mediale Patellae
  • Medial Retinaculum

General

  • Fibrous expansion composed of superficial and deep layers
  • The deep and superficial layers coalesce and insert on the patellar tendon, patella and quadriceps tendon
  • They also extend posteriorly to blend with the medial margin of the knee joint capsule, inferior surface of medial tibial condyle

Superficial Fibers

Deep Layers

Function

  • Important stabilizer of the patella[4]
  • Resists lateral patellar displacement /dislocation
