Peroneal Retinaculum of the Foot

Names

• Fibular Retinacula
• Peroneal Retinacula

General

• Band shape thickenings of deep fascia located posterior and inferiorly to the distal fibula
• Binds the tendons of fibularis longus, fibularis brevis as they cross the ankle

Gross Anatomy

• Can be divided into superior peroneal retinaculum, inferior peroneal retinaculum
• Houses the tendons of fibularis longus, fibularis brevis as they transmit from the leg to the foot posterior to the lateral malleolus

Superior Peroneal Retinaculum

• Inserts at the lateral malleolus
• Extends to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus, deep fascia of the leg

Inferior Peroneal Retinaculum

• Continuation of Inferior Extensor Retinaculum of the Foot
• Extends posteriorly, laterally to attach to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus
