Description

Infrahyoid neck muscles including Omohyoid, Sternohyoid, Sternothyroid, and Thyrohyoid
The 8 extrinsic muscles of the larynx[1]

Name

  • Sternothyroid muscle
  • Sternothyroideus
  • Musculus sternothyroideus
  • Sterno-thyroid

General

  • Paired strap muscles located in the muscular triangle of the neck
  • One of four muscles of the infrahyoid muscle group

Gross Anatomy

  • Origin: Posterior surface of manubrium of sternum, Costal cartilage of rib 1
  • Insertion: Oblique line of thyroid cartilage

Action

  • Depress the larynx

Innervation

Vascular Supply

  • Superior thyroid and lingual arteries

Clinical Significance

  • Needs to be updated
