Suprahyoid Muscles

Description

Illustrated suprahyoid muscles with attachment sites and innervation. The suprahyoid and thyrohyoid muscles are thought to open the upper esophageal sphincter (UES), in addition to other functions [1]

  • Suprahyoid Muscle Group
  • Suprahyoid group
  • Floor-of-mouth muscles
  • Muscles superior to the hyoid
  • Supra-hyoid musculature

General

  • Consists of four muscles located above the hyoid bone in the neck
  • They are all pharyngeal muscles with the exception of mylohyoid

Muscles

Function

  • They all act to elevate the hyoid bone

Vascular Supply

  • Branches of:
    • Facial artery
    • Occipital artery
    • Lingual artery

Clinical Significance
