Arcuate Ligament of the Wrist

Description

Diagram of the palmar “distal V” of the extrinsic ligaments. On the radial side, the radioscaphocapitate ligament (RSCL) extends distally next to a fascicle of the scaphocapitate ligament(SCL). On the ulnar side, the arcuate ligament (TCSL) extends to the triquetral, capitate, and scaphoid.[1]

Names

  • Arcuate Ligament of the Wrist
  • Triquetrocapitoscaphoid Ligament (TCSL)
  • Delta Ligament of the Wrist

Gross Anatomy

  • Originates on the palmar side of the triquetrum
  • Extends in a bow shape over the tip of the hamate, neck of the capitate
  • Terminates on the palmer side of the distal third of the scaphoid

Function

  • Permits the triquetrum to slide a considerable distance over the spiral-shaped joint surface of the hamate
  • Prevents palmer flexion of the proximal carpal row
