General
- One of the many bursa of the knee
- Shares a name with the superficial infrapatellar bursa
Gross Anatomy
- Located above the tibial tubercle, immediately superior to the distal patellar tendon insertion
- Posterior to the lower third of the patellar tendon[3]
- Typically slightly wider than the patellar tendon
- Features two partial compartments, anterior and posterior
- These are divided by a retro patellar fat pad extension
- The deep infrapatellar bursa does not communicate with the knee joint proper
Function
- Deep infrapatellar bursa reduces the friction of the patellar ligament moving over the tibia
