General

Gross Anatomy

  • Located above the tibial tubercle, immediately superior to the distal patellar tendon insertion
  • Posterior to the lower third of the patellar tendon[3]
  • Typically slightly wider than the patellar tendon
  • Features two partial compartments, anterior and posterior
  • These are divided by a retro patellar fat pad extension
  • The deep infrapatellar bursa does not communicate with the knee joint proper

Function

  • Deep infrapatellar bursa reduces the friction of the patellar ligament moving over the tibia
