- Group of 3 muscles which make up the gluteal region, commonly called the buttocks
- All 3 muscles originate from the ilium, sacrum and insert on the femur
- They participate in extension, abduction, external rotation, internal rotation of the hip joint
- Origin: gluteal surface of the ilium
- Insertion: greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity
- Origin: between iliac crest, gluteal line, deep to gluteus maximus
- Insertion: oblique ridge of the lateral greater trochanter
- Origin: lateral aspect of ilium, deep to gluteus medius
- Insertion: anterior surface of greater trochanter
