Name

  • Gluteal Muscle Group
  • Gluteal Muscles
  • Glutes
  • Buttocks

General

  • Group of 3 muscles which make up the gluteal region, commonly called the buttocks
  • All 3 muscles originate from the ilium, sacrum and insert on the femur
  • They participate in extension, abduction, external rotation, internal rotation of the hip joint

Gluteus Maximus

  • Origin: gluteal surface of the ilium
  • Insertion: greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity

Gluteus Medius

  • Origin: between iliac crest, gluteal line, deep to gluteus maximus
  • Insertion: oblique ridge of the lateral greater trochanter

Gluteus Minimus

  • Origin: lateral aspect of ilium, deep to gluteus medius
  • Insertion: anterior surface of greater trochanter

Vascular Supply

Innervation

Actions at the Hip Joint

  • Extension
  • Abduction
  • External rotation
  • Internal rotation
