Other Names

  • Lateral Plantar Nerve

General

  • Branch of the tibial nerve of the foot
  • Supplies motor innervation to plantar foot muscles and sensation to lateral third of sole of foot

Anatomic Course

  • Terminal branch of the Tibial Nerve
  • Originates from the Tarsal Tunnel
  • Enters the foot passing deep to the proximal attachment of abductor hallucis
  • Accompanied by the lateral plantar artery
  • At the head of the fifth metatarsal, divides into superficial and deep branches
  • Superficial: sensation to lateral third of sole of foot, lateral one and a half toes
  • Deep: intrinsic muscles of the foot

Sensory Supply

  • Lateral third of the sole
  • Lateral one and a half toes
